Tips to Help You Nail a Remote Interview

Tips to Help You Nail a Remote Interview
To succeed at your next remote interview, here’s what you’ll need to do.

Picture this: you’ve put in your application for a new position that just opened up, and you’re able to land yourself an interview. The next step will be to nail that interview so you can land that job. Depending on the employer, the type of interview you take may vary. Ever since the pandemic took place, remote job positions have been more common than ever, and this also means more people are giving remote interviews to aspiring job applicants. To succeed at your next remote interview, here’s what you’ll need to do.

Get Familiar With the Technology Your Interviewer is Using

There are many parts of an interview that are the same, regardless of whether you’re doing an in-person or remote interview. Remote interviews, however, may require job applicants to speak with their interviewers by using different technologies. You’ll want to know what platform your interviewer is using for the interview (Google Meets, Whereby Teams, Zoom etc.) so you can familiarize yourself with the platform prior to the interview starting. The last thing you want is technical difficulties popping up mid-interview, as this will not paint you in a good light.

Consider Your Background During Your Remote Interview

When we talk about your “background”, we’re not talking about your educational and job backgrounds; we’re talking about what will physically be in the background when you’re speaking with your interviewer. During a remote interview, your interviewer will be able to see you through a camera that you’ve set up. There shouldn’t be anything in the camera’s view that makes you look unprofessional. Don’t conduct your interview in a messy-looking bedroom, for example. Instead, have the interview in a home office that shows how professional you can be.

Choose Your Attire Wisely

Just like with any job interview, you should pick what you wear wisely. You want to make yourself look professional during your remote interview, so you should avoid wearing anything that’s tattered or otherwise too casual for professional settings. If you’re not sure what attire is considered appropriate, don’t be afraid to ask your recruitment contact prior to the interview starting.
