What to Avoid When Communicating With Coworkers in the Workplace
Communication is key for any business, regardless of industry. With that said, it can be difficult to determine what proper etiquette is at times. This makes it more likely for mistakes to happen when trying to communicate with others. Today, we’ll be looking at things you should avoid doing whenever you’re trying to communicate with coworkers in the workplace.
Avoid Being Too Casual
At times, you’ll need to send emails to your coworkers. When you do, there should be a certain level of formality that’s maintained. As such, refrain from using casual forms of communication, like emojis or slang, when speaking to someone professionally. As you become more acquainted with coworkers, you might be able to become a little more casual, but you should always conduct yourself professionally for as long as you’re in a professional work environment.
Don’t Interrupt Other People
When you’re talking face-to-face with someone, it’s good etiquette to allow them to finish speaking before you say anything. You don’t want to imply that what they’re saying isn’t important.
On top of interrupting people while they speak, it’s also possible to interrupt them while they’re working. If you notice that someone is busy, you should wait for a better time to speak to them. For example, you could send a message to them so that they can get back to you later. This way, they can speak to you when they have the time to spare.
Don’t Bring Up Controversial Topics
Certain topics are best left unspoken. Such topics include the controversial ones, like religion and politics, among others. There’s always the chance that someone won’t be comfortable with the topic that’s being spoken, so it’s best to not speak of such topics at all. Even if others are engaged in such a topic, you still don’t want to indulge. Instead, it’s better to either change the topic, or leave the conversation.
