What You Don’t Want to Add to Your Resume

What You Don’t Want to Add to Your Resume
You don’t want anything on your resume that could make you look worse in the eyes of employers, so we’re here to tell you what you don’t want to include on it.

Are you trying to land your next big job opportunity? If you’re on the job hunt, one of the most important resources you have is your resume. In just one or two pages, this document must tell an employer everything that could make you desirable to their company. Certain pieces of information, however, can actually have the inverse effect. You don’t want anything on your resume that could make you look worse in the eyes of employers, so we’re here to tell you what you don’t want to include on it.

High School Information

High school information might sound relevant, especially if you’ve recently graduated from high school or college and have limited educational or professional experience beyond that. Even so, employers aren’t looking for such information. Instead, we recommend starting with college education for those who have graduated from a post-secondary school. Trade school and technical school education would also be worth mentioning to employers.

Personal Information

While some information about you will be necessary in order to assess your compatibility with a position, pieces of personal information are not as relevant. In fact, employers aren’t even allowed to bring up certain pieces of personal information. Personal information you should avoid including on your resume include:

  • Marital status
  • Social security number
  • Sexual orientation
  • Political/Religious affiliation

Work Contacts

Perhaps you’re looking for a new job while you’re currently employed. If this is the case for you, it’s important to avoid adding contact information to your resume that pertains to your current work situation. Avoid adding information like work emails and phone numbers when putting together your resume because it would mean that you’re using company property in order to conduct your own personal job search. This can cause tension to boil between you and whoever your boss is at the moment, and you may even be terminated from your company as a result of this action.
