Becoming a certified forklift operator is a great way to open yourself up to new opportunities in the workforce.

Becoming a certified forklift operator is a great way to open yourself up to new opportunities in the workforce. Forklifts are fantastic tools in all kinds of settings, but they can also be dangerous for workers to be around when mishandled. This is why OSHA requires that any forklift driver complete a training course and pass an exam to gain certification. First Team Staffing is passionate about light industrial work, so we’ll be going into the process of getting a forklift operator certification.

Forklift Certification Class

The type of certification that you seek out will be based on what type of lift you’ll be driving, and in what situation. There are seven separate “classes” of forklift certification, and any employer will tell you exactly what class they look for to serve their purposes. Temp labor will move you around from one situation to the next pretty frequently, so it may be the best choice to obtain a few different certifications to ensure that you’ll be the right fit for any job.

Forklift Certification Courses

Fortunately, there are plenty of places that offer OSHA-approved courses for forklift operators. Some employers may have their own directory that they can guide you with, but if they don’t then you can always contact your local vocational school or forklift dealer. Because the process only takes a few days, these courses are relatively easy to offer at low rates. Some online classes may be as inexpensive as $50.

The entire course will consist of 6-8 hours of classroom instruction, a written exam, and practical training and evaluation in that order. A final evaluation based on your exam score and practical grade will determine whether or not you get certified at the end. The certificate will show your name, the date, and the name of the person responsible for the evaluation.
